RIO GRANDE, Ohio — Jesse Watson hit a pair of two-run doubles to lead the University of Rio Grande in a 5-2 win over Brescia University, Monday afternoon, in River States Conference baseball action at Bob Evans Field.
The RedStorm improved to 14-26 overall and 7-11 in conference play with the victory, moving 1/2-game in front of the Bearcats in the RSC standings in the process.
Head coach Brad Warnimont’s club also closed to within one game of Oakland City University for sixth place. The top six teams will advance to the conference tournament.
Brescia, whose head coach, Jon Herbig, is a former graduate assistant coach under Warnimont, slipped to 6-23 overall and 6-11 inside the RSC.
Watson, a senior from Las Cruces, New Mexico, delivered a two-run double in the first inning and added another in the seventh to reinforce an early 3-0 lead that had chopped to 3-2.
The timely hitting backed a solid pitching performance from Trey Carter and Cody Gabriel.
Carter, a freshman from Wheelersburg, Ohio, allowed seven hits, a walk and two runs, while striking out a career-high nine batters over six innings, for his first win in four decisions.
Gabriel, a junior from Upper Sandusky, Ohio, allowed one hit, a pair of walks and fanned three over three innings to earn a save.
Senior Caden Cluxton (Washington Court House, OH) finished 2-for-3 and added a run-scoring double of his own in the second inning, while freshman Darius Jordan (Minford, OH) also had a double in the winning effort.
Brescia scored its runs in the fifth and sixth innings thanks to an RBI double by Alejandro Hernandez and a run-scoring hit by Hunter Canada.
Canada finished 2-for-3, while Trejen Fox-Birdwell also had a pair of hits in a losing cause.
Wyatt Griskey started and took the loss for the Bearcats, allowing six hits, six walks and five runs over seven innings.
Rio Grande returns to action with a non-conference doubleheader at Bluefield (Va.) College on Tuesday.
First pitch for game one is set for 2 p.m. at Bowen Field.
