CHEHSIRE, Ohio — Revenge at its finest.
The River Valley softball team — which dropped an 11-0 decision on April 1 in Athens — got redemption in the form of a 7-6 walk-off victory over the Lady Bulldogs, on Wednesday night in Gallia County.
The Lady Raiders (5-8, 3-4 TVC Ohio) trailed 3-0 after the top of the first inning, but they got two runs back in the bottom of the second, when Cori Williams and Erin Morgan scored. AHS (4-8, 3-5) scored once in the third inning, increasing the lead to 4-2.
RVHS tied the game in the bottom of the third, when Morgan and Reilly Barcus scored. Both teams scored both one run in the fourth inning, but were held scoreless in the fifth.
Kat Kroutel scored for AHS in the top of the sixth, giving the guests a 6-5 lead. However, the Lady Raiders again had an answer and tied the game at six, as Morgan scored for the third time in the game.
Athens put two runners in scoring position with one out in the top of the seventh, but a strikeout and a ground-out let the hosts escape unscathed.
RVHS senior pitcher Ashley Gilmore helped her own cause, leading off the bottom of the seventh with a single and a stolen base. After a ground-out, Chloe Gee came through with a single that plated Gilmore, and capped off the 7-6 RVHS victory.
Gilmore earned the pitching victory in a complete game effort, striking out four, while allowing six runs on 13 hits and two free passes. Kaylee Stewart was the losing pitcher of record, allowing seven runs on nine hits and three walks, in a 6.1 innings pitched. Stewart had two strikeouts in the setback.
Morgan led the Lady Raiders at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored. RVHS senior Courtney Smith was 2-for-3 with two singles and one run scored, Barcus was 1-for-3 with a double and one run scored, while Gilmore and Williams both singled once and scored once. Gee and Bailey Hollanbaugh both singled once in the victory.
Kroutel led the Lady Bulldogs with four hits and two runs scored, while Brooklyn Sikorski had two hits and one run scored. Kailyn Sharp had two hits for AHS, Grace Pratt and Lilly Mills both singled once and scored once, while Stwart, Brooklyn Stallworth and Roni Clark each had one hit.
The Lady Raiders had four errors in the game, while Athens committed three.
