HAMLIN, W.Va. — Picking up some steam again.

The Point Pleasant softball team matched its season high with a fourth consecutive victory during a 6-1 decision over host Lincoln County in a non-conference contest Wednesday night.

The Lady Knights (10-6) led wire-to-wire in the seven-inning affair, as the guests plated four runs in the top of the first and ultimately never looked back. PPHS tacked on two more scores in the fifth for a six-run advantage, but the Lady Panthers (7-9) eventually broke through with a run in the sixth to wrap up the five-run outcome.

Point Pleasant snapped the hosts’ two-game win streak while also claiming a season sweep after posting a 9-1 decision back on March 29 at PPHS.

Michaela Cottrill and Makinley Higginbotham led off the first with back-to-back singles, then Cottrill scored on a single by Karissa Cochran — making it a 1-0 contest.

Leah Cochran followed with a ground-rule double that plated both Higginbotham and Karissa Cochran for a 3-0 edge, then Leah Cochran scored on an error that allowed Kelsie Byus to reach safely.

The score stayed that way until the fifth as Leah Cochran reached on a fielder’s choice, than Hannah Smith entered in for Cochran as a courtesy runner and advanced to second on a single by Byus.

Megan Hammond singled home Smith for a 5-0 advantage, and an error on the Hammond hit also allowed Byus to come home for a 6-0 cushion.

Sarah Barrett singled home Alyssa Adkins in the bottom of the sixth for the Lady Panthers’ lone run, which ultimately also wrapped up the scoring.

PPHS outhit the hosts by a 14-5 overall margin and committed only one of the four errors in the contest. The Lady Knights stranded eight runners on base and LCHS left four on the bags.

Karissa Cochran was the winning pitcher of record after allowing one earned run and five hits over seven innings while striking out six. Bailey Pullen suffered the loss after surrendering six runs (four earned) and 13 hits over seven frames.

Karissa Cochran paced Point Pleasant with three hits, followed by Hammond and Leah Cochran with two safeties apiece. Cottrill, Higginbotham, Byus, Tanner King, Cammy Hesson and Lila Beattie also had a hit each for the victors.

Leah Cochran led the guests with two RBIs, followed by Byus and Karissa Cochran with an RBI each.

Adkins paced the hosts with two hits and a run scored, while Barrett, Rachel Pennington and Kelley Long added a safety apiece in the setback.
