Lady Pointers down Blue Angels

SOUTH POINT, Ohio — It was too cold and too windy with too many errors — and ultimately too few runs and hits for the Gallia Academy High School softball squad on Monday.

As a result, the Blue Angels suffered their first defeat of the season in four tries, losing 7-1 at South Point in an Ohio Valley Conference clash.

The loss leaves the Blue Angels at 3-1 — and an even 1-1 in the OVC.

Gallia Academy opened league play with an 11-0 shutout at Ironton on Friday.

Unfortunately on Monday, the Blue Angels only scored once, leading 1-0 in the second inning.

South Point pushed across the final seven runs, tying the game at 1-1 after two — before a pair of three-run outbursts in innings three and four.

South Point doubled up the Blue Angels in hits 15-7, as Gallia Academy also committed five errors.

Hunter Copley, the Blue Angels’ pitcher, only allowed one earned run as the result of the multiple Blue Angel mistakes.

She struck out four and went the distance in the circle.

South Point pitcher Abby Hannah had the complete game win, scattering seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Hannah singled to lead off the second for South Point, then scored on an error off the bat of Leah Lawson two batters later.

The Lady Pointers then rapped out six hits in the third — and four more in the fourth for the 7-1 lead.

Copley had two singles to lead Gallia Academy, as Allie Jo Clagg in the first, Ryleigh Caldwell in the second, Lexi Polinsky in the fourth, and Makenzie Barr in the sixth also singled.

Gallia Academy earned its run in the second, when Kimberly Edelmann doubled to lead off, then scored on back-to-back groundouts — with Polinsky picking up the run batted in.

But Hannah — following facing five Blue Angels apiece in the opening two innings, faced only four Angels each in the third, fourth and sixth, while retiring the side 1-2-3 in the fifth and last.

Gallia Academy left six runners on base.

The Blue Angels, as part of playing in two leagues this spring, opened the final season of Southeastern Ohio Athletic League play at Warren on Tuesday.

Gallia Academy returns to the road, and returns to OVC action, tonight (Wednesday, April 6) at Fairland.
