Logan annihilates Blue Angels, 71-37

CENTENARY, Ohio — Can’t stop the skid.

The Gallia Academy girls basketball team suffered its ninth straight setback on Saturday afternoon, as Southeastern Ohio Athletic League guest Logan cruised to a 71-37 victory over the Blue and White.

The Blue Angels (2-17, 0-5 SEOAL) trailed 20-10 at the conclusion of the opening period, and Logan (13-7, 4-0) expanded its advantage to 39-18 by halftime.

The Lady Chiefs outscored GAHS 15-to-9 in the third quarter and 17-to-10 in the fourth, capping off the 71-37 win and the season sweep of the Blue Angels.

GAHS junior Jalea Caldwell led the Blue and White with 17 points and four assists, followed by Hunter Copley with seven points and six rebounds. Adrienne Jenkins scored six points, Carly Shriver added five, while Hanna Johnson rounded out the Blue Angel total with two markers. Jenelle Stevens contributed five rebounds to the GAHS cause.

Gallia Academy shot 10-of-16 (62.5 percent) from the free throw line and 13-of-44 (29.5 percent) from the field, including just 1-of-8 (12.5 percent) from beyond the arc. As a team the Blue Angels finished with 35 rebounds, five assists, six steals and 29 turnovers.

Cassie Bentley led the hosts with 14 points, followed by Paige Davis with 10. Alicia Clark, Danielle Arnett and Paige Lunsford each scored eight points, with Clark recording a team-best four assists. Rachel Pierce posted seven points, Cassidy Bosch added six points to go with a game-high nine rebounds, while Tricia Bentley scored five points. Rounding out the Lady Chiefs’ total were Haleigh Sammons with four points and Bethany Starlin with one.

Logan connected on 15-of-21 (71.4 percent) free throw attempts and 26-of-71 (36.6 percent) field goal tries, including 4-of-17 (23.5 percent) trifecta attempts. Collectively, the Purple and White recorded 47 rebounds, 17 assists, 17 steals and 13 turnovers.

Logan also defeated the Blue Angels on January 9, by an 83-43 count in Jim Myers Gymnasium.

GAHS — which hosted Fairland in Ohio Valley Conference play on Monday — returns to action on Thursday when the Blue Angels invade Portsmouth. Gallia Academy’s last victory came against the Lady Trojans, by the tune of 52-41 in Centenary.

The Blue Angels will play their final SEOAL contest on Saturday at archrival Jackson.
