MIDWAY, Ky. — Harry Reilly scored two of the University of Rio Grande’s four second half goals and assisted on another, leading the RedStorm to a 5-0 win over Midway University, Saturday afternoon, in River States Conference men’s soccer action at a damp and muddy Midway Soccer Field.
Senior Eduardo Zurita (Sant Boi de Llobregat, Spain) added a goal and an assist for the third-ranked RedStorm, who finished their regular season schedule at 16-0 overall and 9-0 in league play.
Rio Grande will have a first round bye in the upcoming RSC Tournament and will next host the survivor of the quarterfinal round matchup between the still-to-be-determined No. 4 and No. 5 seeds on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at a time to be determined.
Midway slipped to 5-11 overall and 4-5 in the conference with the loss.
Rio netted the lone first half goal in the match when freshman Nicolas Cam Orellana (Santiago, Chile) scored his conference-leading 20th goal of the season on a penalty kick with 17:57 left before halftime.
Sophomore Ewan McLauchlan (Aroch, Scotland) extended the lead to 2-0 with 31:22 remaining in the contest with a short chip through the lower right corner of the goal.
The RedStorm’s final three goals came in the last 10:09 of the match.
Reilly, a senior from Coventry, England, gathered in a pass from Zurita and booted a shot over the head of Midway keeper Andres Ordonez from 10 yards out.
Just under two minutes later, Zurita took a pass from Reilly and pushed a shot into an open net from five yards out to make it 4-0.
Reilly set the final score with 1:15 left, scoring on a rebound of a shot by senior teammate Mitchell Osmond (Sydney, Australia) which Ordonez saved but failed to hang on to.
Rio finished with a 19-8 edge in shots overall, including a 12-6 advantage in shots on frame.
The RedStorm also had a 10-3 cushion in corner kick chances.
Junior Richard Dearle (Castle Donington, England) recorded six saves in the win for Rio.
Ordonez stopped seven shots in the loss for the Eagles.
