RSC recognizes Rio men’s soccer duo

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio — University of Rio Grande freshman Nicolas Cam Orellana and junior Richard Dearle have been named the River States Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for Oct. 8-14.

A 6-2 forward from Santiago, Chile, Cam Orellana had got five goals and 10 points in a pair of wins for the RedStorm. He had the game-winning goal in a big 3-0 RSC win over WVU Tech and had four goals in a 12-1 win over rival Shawnee State.

Cam Orellana leads the conference with 17 goals and 38 points.

Dearle received the defensive honor for a third consecutive week.

The junior from Castle Donington, England, added on to his NAIA-leading goals-against average of 0.18 per game. The shutout effort against WVU-Tech was has ninth clean sheet of the season.

Dearle made five saves on the week and played all 180 minutes. He has given up just two goals in 11 starts, one of which was on a penalty kick.

The two victories pushed the RedStorm to 13-0 overall and 6-0 inside the RSC.

Rio will next play at Ohio Christian on Thursday.

RedStorm’s Davis earns 2nd straight weekly honor

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio — University of Rio Grande (Ohio) forward Peyten Davis had another big week for her second River States Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week award in a row, which was for her play Oct. 8-14.

A native of Chillicothe, Ohio, Davis had a pair of two-goal games for the RedStorm and a total of eight points on the week.

Rio Grande went 1-1 on the week with Davis doing her part with two goals in a 2-1 win over WVU Tech and then both goals in a 3-2 loss to Shawnee State.

Davis, a sophomore, leads the RSC with 14 goals and 30 points on the year. Rio Grande is 5-8-1 overall and pulled even at 3-3 RSC.

The RedStorm is at Ohio Christian for its next game Oct. 18.

Rio’s Williams honored by RSC

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio — University of Rio Grande (Ohio) senior Lucy Williams led the River States Conference teams at the Wilmington Jenna Strong Fall Classic and thus was named RSC Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week for Oct. 8-14.

Williams, from Athens, Ohio, posted a time of 18:52 in the 5K to place 20th at the meet. That was the top performance of any of the RSC runners in the race and the second-best NAIA showing. There were also a number of NCAA Division I programs in the field.

Rio Grande will visit the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge hosted by Aquinas (Mich.) for its next meet on Oct. 20.
