POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — A solid effort, from start to finish.
The Point Pleasant volleyball team defeated Teays Valley Christian in consecutive games on Thursday evening in Mason County. The Lady Knights (5-10) struggled a bit early, but they pulled it together and finished off the Lady Lions in sound fashion.
TVC started off on a 4-0 run during Game 1 before Point Pleasant senior Charli Leach got the Lady Blacks back within one. Both squads traded the lead back and forth until Leach got four more service points to give PPHS the 15-10 lead. The Lady Lions didn’t give in as they tied the game late 20-all. Leach sealed the first set victory 25-22.
Point came out strong in Game 2 with a 9-4 advantage. TVC roared back to within two points midway through the set, but the Lady Knights continued to pour on the offense. Cierra Porter’s three points at the end gave the Lady Knights the second set 25-17
Early in the final set, sophomore Mackenzie Freeman’s four points helped the Lady Knights to a 8-3 advantage. Freeman added four more points in the middle of the game to give Point Pleasant a 19-14 lead. The Lady Knights won the third game 25-19.
Freeman led Point with 12 service points, followed by Leach with 11 points. Leah Cochran finished with four points, while Porter and Gracie Cottrill eanred three points each.
Cottrill led with a team-high eight kills, followed by Becca Musgrave with six kills and Cochran with five kills. Brenna Dotson with four kills, while Porter finished with four kills.
“Redemption is wonderful,” Marla Cotrill said. “The girls moved their feet fast and they were jumping better. We’re midway through the season and we have improved by leaps and bounds.”
The Lady Knights fell to the Lady Lions during their last meeting on Sept. 15. Point Pleasant will host St. Albans on Monday. Match time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
