RIO GRANDE, Ohio — Just six days removed from a 52-shot onslaught in a win over Carlow University, the University of Rio Grande men’s soccer team did itself one better.

Well, 16 better to be exact.

The RedStorm fired off a school- and River States Conference-record 68 shots in a 9-0 rout of Cincinnati Christian University, Thursday night, at Evan E. Davis Field.

As a result of the win, head coach Scott Morrissey’s club clinched one of two quarterfinal round byes in the RSC Tournament, which begins next Saturday.

Rio Grande (13-1-1, 7-0-1 RSC) can clinch home-field advantage throughout the tournament with a win over Asbury University in its regular season finale on Saturday night. The Eagles currently trail the RedStorm by one game in the RSC standings.

Rio finished with a 68-2 edge in shots during Thursday’s win over CCU, including a 34-1 advantage in shots on goal. The RedStorm also had all of the game’s 10 corner kick chances.

Rio’s 68 shots are the second-highest total in the NAIA this season, trailing only the 77 shots recorded by Waldorf (Iowa) in a 20-0 win over Nebraksa Christian on Sept. 2.

Juniors Eduardo Zurita (Sant Boi de Llobregat, Spain) and Spencer Reinford (McAlisterville, PA) scored two goals each in the victory, while junior Omar Walcott (Kingston, Jamaica) and sophomore Deri Corfe (Chester, England) each had a goal and a pair of assists.

Rio Grande scored what proved to be the only goal it would need just 14:25 into the match when junior Harry Reilly (Coventry, England) found the back of the net off an assist by Corfe.

Walcott, Zurita and Corfe added one goal each to give the RedStorm a 4-0 lead at the intermission. Freshman Samuel Pederson (Aldershot, England) assisted on Zurita’s first half score.

Reinford scored his first goal off an assist from Corfe just under 7-1/2 minutes into the second half and Zurita added his final marker nine minutes later to push the lead to 6-0.

Walcott assisted on goals by freshman Benjamin Andoh (Glasgow, Scotland) and senior Isaiah Chapman (Cincinnati, OH) over a span of 2:46 to push the lead to 8-0 and Reinford found the net via a feed from freshman Callum Malanaphy (Stourbridge, England) with 6:30 left to play to set the final score.

Freshman Luis Rodriguez (San Jose, Costa Rica) recorded one save for the RedStorm on an otherwise quiet night in goal.

Bryan McDowell had 25 saves in a losing cause for the Eagles.

Kickoff for the RedStorm’s showdown with Asbury on Saturday is set for 7 p.m.
