OWENSBORO, Ky. — The 2015 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener did not go as the University of Rio Grande volleyball team had hoped.

The RedStorm committed a season-high 32 attack errors and dropped a 25-18, 23-25, 25-18, 25-23 decision to Brescia University Tuesday night at the Campus Activities Center.

Rio Grande slipped to 5-3 overall and 0-1 in league play, while the Bearcats upped their overall mark to 4-3 with a third victory in four conference outings.

Needing a win in the fourth set to force a fifth and deciding final stanza, the RedStorm bolted to a 7-1 lead, but BU parlayed a late 6-0 run into a 24-22 advantage and went on to close out the match.

Rio finished with a season-best 55 kills, but the 32 errors helped lead to a .163 hitting percentage for the match.

Senior Alex Phillips (Orient, OH) had a team-high 12 kills and two blocks in a losing cause, while sophomore Aleah Pelphrey (Piketon, OH) also finished with 12 kills. Junior Autumn Snider (Marion, OH) and sophomore Madison Wilson (Groveport, OH) had 10 kills each, while junior Kayla Briley (Marion, OH) was credited with 49 assists.

Junior Chandler Brown (Stockdale, OH) had a match-high 28 digs, while freshman Taylor Overly (Chillicothe, OH) had 11 of her own.

Brescia was led by Alex Satterfield with 41 assists, while Alisha McBride led all hitters with 14 kills. Defensively, Rhiannon Ungerer had 20 digs for the Bearcats and McBride had seven blocks.

Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference tri-match at Ohio Christian University. The RedStorm face the host Trailblazers at 3 p.m., before squaring off with Glenville (W.Va.) State at 5 p.m.
