VINCENT, Ohio — The Blue Angels took a major step in claiming another Southeastern Ohio Athletic League championship on Thursday night.
The Gallia Academy volleyball team, which shared the 2014 SEOAL championship with Warren, defeated the host Lady Warriors 3-1 in the league opener.
Warren scored first in the opening game, but GAHS (7-0, 1-0 SEOAL) took a lead at 2-1 and never relinquished it, cruising to a 25-17 victory.
Gallia Academy surged out to an early second game lead, but an 11-point run by Warren helped the hosts claim a 25-18 win to even the match at one game apiece. This is the first game GAHS has lost this season, ending the winning streak at 19.
After battling through a pair of lead changes early in the third Warren managed to take a 16-15 lead. Gallia Academy scored ended the third on a 10-to-3 run, securing the 25-19 win.
The fourth game saw eight ties and five lead changes, but the Blue Angels prevailed by a 25-22 final, giving GAHS the 3-1 match victory.
Ashton Webb and Grace Martin led the Blue Angels with each recording 14 points and one ace. Carly Shriver posted nine service points, Jordan Walker added eight, including two aces, while Jenna Meadows added three markers. Allison McGhee rounded out the GAHS scoring with two points and one ace.
Martin paced the GAHS net attack with 18 kills, followed by Meadows and Webb with 10 each. Hanna Johnson added eight kills, Walker posted six, while Ryleigh Caldwell marked one in the win. Walker finished with a team-best 13 blocks, Johnson followed with 11, Martin posted seven, Webb chipped in with four, Meadows added three and Caldwell finished with one. Meadows led the defense with 32 digs, while Shriver marked a team-best 24 assists, followed by McGhee with 10.
GAHS will look to sweep Warren when these teams meet again on October 1, in Centenary.
The Blue Angels return to the court on Monday when Ironton visits Gallia County for an Ohio Valley Conference clash.
