Lady Panthers edge GAHS, 1-0

CHESAPEAKE, Ohio — Both teams had opportunities, but the Lady Panthers had a few more … and the end result showed.

Breanna Russell singled home Jordan Storms with two outs in the fourth inning, which ultimately provided all the difference for host Chesapeake on Wednesday night during a 1-0 decision over the Gallia Academy softball team in an Ohio Valley Conference contest in Lawrence County.

The visiting Blue Angels (10-6, 8-4 OVC) had more hits in the game, but the Lady Panthers produced two more baserunners throughout the course of the evening — which played a factor in the final outcome.

GAHS produced three of its four safeties through the first three innings, but both teams found themselves deadlocked in a scoreless battle headed into the fourth.

Storms reached safely on an error with one out in the bottom of the fourth, then Lyric Bair laid down a sacrifice to advance Storms over to second. Storms then stole third and Russell followed by driving a 2-2 offering to short centerfield as Storms scored, giving CHS a 1-0 advantage.

Kimberly Edelmann started the top of the fifth by reaching safely on an error, but the guests left Edelmann stranded at first headed into the sixth.

The Blue Angels had their best opportunity arrive in the sixth as Alex Barnes tripled to start the frame, but the Blue and White had their final six batters retired in order en route to the one-run loss.

Gallia Academy outhit the hosts by a slim 4-3 overall margin and also committed two of the three errors in the contest. Chesapeake stranded six runners on base, while the guests left five on the bags.

Brooke Webb was the winning pitcher of record after allowing four hits while striking out six over seven innings. Hunter Copley took the tough-luck loss after surrendering an unearned run, three hits and two walks over six frames while fanning five.

Barnes led GAHS with two hits, followed by Allie Young and Paxton Roberts with a safety apiece. Webb, Storms and Russell had a hit each for the victors.

Gallia Academy won the first contest against the Lady Panthers after posting a 5-2 decision in Centenary back on April 10.
