FLORENCE, Ky. — University of Rio Grande freshman forward Joao Paulo Antonio and junior defender Callum Cobb were named the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, on Monday night.
The duo helped the fifth-ranked RedStorm post a 2-0 record in the RedStorm Soccer Classic, including a 3-1 win over No. 8 Vanguard (Calif.) University on Saturday night.
Paulo Antonio, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, netted what proved to be the game-winning goal against Vanguard, snapping a 1-1 tie just over six minutes into the second half.
Paulo Antonio’s goal was part of a balanced scoring attack for Rio Grande (5-0), which had five different players score a single goal over the course of the two weekend contests. He has started four of five games on the year with three goals, one assist, seven points and a team-high 18 shots.
Cobb, who hails from London, England, was a part of a defense that allowed just eight shots in the two games.
The Rio defensive unit did not allow a goal to score during the regular course of play, as both goals scored against the RedStorm on the week came via penalty kick.
Cobb has started all five games and has three goals and six points on the year. The RedStorm is outscoring its opponents by a score of 25-3 on the year.
Rio Grande will be in action again on Saturday versus No. 2 Northwestern Ohio.
