ONA, W.Va. — The Point Pleasant cross country teams had some tough luck in their respective season openers Saturday at the 2015 St. Mary’s Medical Center XC Festival held at Cabell Midland High School in Cabell County.
The Black Knights finished last out of 14 teams in the boys competition with 382 points, while the Lady Knights had only four runners and were not able to record a team score. Cabell Midland won the boys title with 18 points, while the Hurricane girls came away with the team trophy with 34 points.
Hunter White paced the Point boys with a 42nd place time of 19:10.90, followed by Tanner Durst (23:22.90) and Wyatt Dean (24:11.75) with respective finishes of 82nd and 87th. Brandon Henderson (25:13.13) and Brandon Hall (27:47.07) rounded out the team score by placing 88th and 93rd, while Bradley Gibbs was also 96th with a mark of 29:39.61.
There were 97 competitors in the boys race, with Will Sheils of CMHS posting the winning time of 16:36.54. Cabell Midland had the top three finishers and four of the first five placers overall.
Karson Bonecutter led the PPHS girls by finishing 37th overall with a time of 23:26.30, followed by Allison Henderson in 60th with a mark of 26:10.52. Makinley Higginbotham (35:30.30) and Karissa Cochran (38:26.89) respectively finished 81st and 83rd as well for the Lady Knights.
There were 83 competitors in the girls race, with Parkersburg freshman Olivia Collett posting a winning time of 19:13.96. Hurricane had five of the top 13 overall efforts in winning the girls’ team crown.
