HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Willian Paulino scored a pair of goals and the University of Rio Grande turned in another stellar defensive effort as the RedStorm knocked off Saint Xavier University, 4-0, Friday night, in men’s soccer action at Hoops Family Field at the Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
Rio Grande, ranked No. 5 in the NAIA preseason coaches’ poll, improved to 2-0 with the victory.
The game was the season opener for the Cougars.
Paulino, a junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, got the scoring underway just over 21 minutes into the match off an assist from sophomore Joao Paulo Antonio (Sao Paulo, Brazil).
Less than three minutes later, junior Pau Rodriguez (Barcelona, Spain) finished a feed from sophomore Danny Carroll (Liverpool, England) to make it 2-0.
Paulino’s second goal of the night – off a feed from junior Patricio Arce (Santiago, Chile) came just 4:07 into the second half, while freshman Ben Mendoza (Chichester, England) set the final score with a goal off an assist by sophomore Spencer Reinford (McAlisterville, PA) with 12:25 left to play.
Rio Grande finished with a 26-4 edge in shots, including 11-2 on goal. Saint Xavier didn’t manage its first shot until the game’s 69th minute.
The RedStorm have outshot their opponents 48-5 in their two contests thus far.
Freshman Benjamin Martinez (Montpellier, France) collected two saves in his second straight shutout effort.
Frank Valle had seven saves in a losing cause for the Cougars.
Rio Grande will return to action on Sunday against Saint Francis (Ind.) University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Marshall University’s Hoops Family Field.
