POINT PLEASANT — It is time once again for area artisans to get out their favorite quilts and get them ready for the annual Community Educational Outreach Service (CEOS) “Harvest of Quilts.”
This year’s event takes place at the West Virginia State Farm Museum Oct. 3-4, in conjunction with the museum’s Country Fall Festival which will also feature an Antique Gas Engine Show, the Gravely Tractor Swap Meet, an Antique Tractor Pull, entertainment, gospel music, and making sorghum, apple butter, cider and soup.
Members of the Mason County CEOS Quilt Show Committee met recently at the West Virginia University Extension Office in Point Pleasant to ensure that everything is on schedule for the upcoming event.
Quilt registration forms have been distributed to various places in the county and more will be made available Oct. 2 when the registration process begins at 3 p.m. in the back of the farm museum’s dining hall. Participants will save time by completing registration forms for each quilt when dropped them off to be displayed.
During the Quilt Show, members of the public will vote for favorite quilts in the following categories: Large, machine-quilted; Large, hand-quilted; Small, machine-quilted; and Small, hand-quilted. Winners of these four categories will receive cash prizes or $20, $10, or $5, depending on size and placement.
This year, a new item is being accepted for competition: a quilt block, any size, using any fabric, but must have Harvest Time as its theme. Although first and second Place cash prizes will be offered only for the large and small quilts, all first, second and third place winners, including quilt blocks, will receive ribbons.
Voting will end at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4. While waiting for the votes to be counted, quilters are invited to enjoy refreshments and entertainment in the dining hall. Winners will be announced around 4 p.m. Pictures will be taken of the winners, after which time all quilts may be collected by their owners. Anyone wishing to remain after the show and help dismantle the quilt racks will be appreciated by the quilt show committee.
In summary, the CEOS “Harvest of Quilts” will be on display in the rear of the dining hall at the farm museum located at 1458 Fairground Road, north of Point Pleasant, on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday, Oct. 4, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Quilts are to be registered beginning 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2.
