GALLIPOLIS FERRY — Those looking for a fun and safe way to keep their children entertained have something unique to consider in Mason County.
Empire Cheer Academy, formerly known as Empire Athletix, provides a tumbling and cheerleading gym that allows youth to have an outlet for fun while also getting physical exercise. Empire Cheer Academy is the only such tumbling facility in Mason County.
According to Stacey Adams, the owner of the academy, the gymnasium was recently renovated with all new equipment. Adams said their positive coaching staff and family-oriented environment make Empire Cheer Academy a “great” place to bring your kids.
Adams said the academy also tries to give back to the community by taking on a special project each year. For example, in 2013 the academy raised and donated $1,000 to the Children’s Oncology Department at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Money has also been given to the support the Marshall University Danceathon. Adams said they would be collecting donations again in August for razors, deodorant and shaving cream for Crosslight of Hope.
“I like my students to learn how to give back to the community,” Adams said.
The academy also hosts Christmas parties each year to help raise money.
Adams added Empire Cheer Academy is in the final stages to potentially receive a $100,000 grant from Mission Main Street Grants. Voting occurred earlier in the year with the winner being announced in September. If they win the grant, Adams said she hopes to use the money to build a community center to help keep kids off the streets.
According to staff at Empire Cheer Academy, it has been successful at training young athletes and received national titles during the first year of operation; frequently taking first, second and third places in competitions.
