LETART — The Community Foundation of Mason County (MCCF), Inc. Board of Directors recently presented $2,845 in community grant funds to representatives of the Letart Park Development Organization.
The money is to be used for upgrades and expansions for the Letart Nature Park. Specifically, these funds helped provide gravel; trail mapping; signage; and a kiosk for the park.
“The Foundation is happy to help the Letart Park volunteers with funding for improvements to the Letart Nature Park,” Mario Liberatore, MCCF, Inc. board chair said. “It is amazing to see what this dedicated group of volunteers have done with this park land in Letart.”
The Letart Nature Park emerged from a community, grassroots effort to preserve county-owned property and develop it into the nature park, as opposed to selling off the property to private owners. Volunteers from the nature park organization regularly report to the Mason County Commission on the progress of the park. Last fall, volunteers reported the Army National Guard assisted with excavating the area which cleared the way for some nature trails to open to the public for walking and hiking. The group has even done GPS work on the trails and was to put out a map showing their location and degree of difficulty.
With the park being county property, it is open to the public and located behind the Letart Community Building. Regular Nature Park Committee meetings happen at the Country Corner Restaurant. Find the group on Facebook for more information.
