May events planned in New Haven

NEW HAVEN — Several events have been planned for May in the Town of New Haven, according to Recorder Roberta Hysell.

Saturday will mark the annual block sale, where residents throughout the municipality set up wares for sale in their yards and garages.

Hysell said on that day, both Layne Street and Midway Drive will be designated as one-way roads. Motorists will enter on Layne Street and exit on Midway Drive. The recorder urges those driving to be extra cautious as pedestrians will be walking along the route.

Spring clean-up will be held on both May 12 and 19. A new procedure will be followed this year, according to Hysell.

If a resident’s trash is normally picked up on Monday or Tuesday, spring clean-up will be Thursday, May 12. For those whose normal pick-up day is Wednesday or Friday, spring clean-up will be Thursday, May 19.

The service is offered free of charge to New Haven residents only. No trash can be brought in from other areas, Hysell stated.

Early voting for the New Haven town election will begin May 23 and continue through June 4. Office hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition, on two Saturdays, May 28 and June 4, early voting will be conducted at the town hall from 8 a.m. to noon.

“There are 1,169 people registered to vote in New Haven,” Hysell said. “With 15 running for the five council seats, and three plus a write-in for mayor, I hope more people will come out to vote.”

Candidates in the June 7 election include Eric Blain, Stephen “Snuf” Smith, incumbent Charles Yonker, and write-in Jerry Spradling for mayor; incumbent Roberta Hysell for recorder; and Jackie Blain, incumbent James Elias, George Gibbs, Sarah Gibbs, Matthew Gregg, Karen Ann Hindel, Nora Hoffett, Grant Hysell, incumbent Vinson “Smitty” Jarrell, James McCormick, Pamela Schwarz, Matthew Shell, Timothy Stone, Elnora Weaver and Erin Young for council.

Hysell noted the town hall will be closed on May 30 for Memorial Day.
