State reports daily record of 46 coronavirus deaths

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia reported a daily record of 46 deaths from the coronavirus Tuesday.

Health officials said eight of the deaths were from Monongalia County, six were from Hancock County and four apiece from Berkeley, Greenbrier, Kanawha and Mercer counties.

The previous daily record was 42 deaths on Dec. 22. There have been 1,442 deaths in the state from the virus since the start of the pandemic.

There were 806 people hospitalized for the virus as of Monday, including a record 214 patients in intensive care units.

But the number of active cases has gone down slightly in recent days, reversing a trend that saw active cases soar 57% in the past month.

The state has received more than 103,000 doses of virus vaccines and administered more than 56,000, or about 55%.
