ATV crash claims life of Apple Grove man

POINT PLEASANT — The holiday weekend took a tragic turn when a young man from Apple Grove lost his life in an ATV crash.

According to the Mason County Sheriff’s Department, deputies along with personnel from the West Virginia State Police and West Virginia Department of Natural Resources, responded to a report of an ATV crash on Oshel Road just outside Point Pleasant on Sunday, July 5.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers located an ATV that had struck a tree. The driver of the ATV, Scott Michael Duncan II, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene by Mason County EMS personnel and the medical examiner.

No further information about the accident has been released and it remains under investigation, according to the sheriff’s department.

News of Duncan’s death began to spread across social media on Sunday as friends left heartfelt tributes to the young man on his Facebook page. Duncan was a 2011 graduate of Point Pleasant High School and worked in the local river industry.

Details regarding Duncan’s services have not yet been released by Deal Funeral Home, which is assisting the family.
