Editor’s Note: As we approach the November General Election, the Point Pleasant Register will be running articles allowing the candidates in contested races to introduce themselves and tell the voters why they are running for office. Each candidate is asked, in their own words, to respond to two questions — tell us about yourself and why are you running for this office.

POINT PLEASANT — Voters in Mason County, and across the country, are watching the state’s race for U.S. Senate between Incumbent Joe Manchin (D) and Attorney General Patrick Morrisey (R).

Candidates, along with their responses submitted to the Register, are listed below in alphabetical order.

Joe Manchin

Tell us about yourself:

Joe Manchin grew up in Farmington, WV, a small coal mining town where he learned West Virginia values like hard work, fairness, and family. As Governor, Joe cut taxes, increased teacher pay, improved services for seniors, and put our state’s financial house in order. In the U.S. Senate, Joe’s top priority will always will be to stand up for West Virginia.

Why I decided to run for this office?

I am running to fight for jobs and economic opportunity, to protect Social Security and Medicare, to secure the border, and protect health care coverage for people with pre-existing conditions. I’ve always been committed to taking care of West Virginia’s children, seniors, workers, and educators, and ensuring that our Veterans receive the care they deserve. I am fighting against the drug epidemic that is ravaging our state, robbing us of workers, and hampering our economy from the growth that it should have. Also, I won’t stop fighting until our coal miners’ pensions are fully secured.

I will continue to work with both parties to get results. For me it’s all about West Virginia.

Patrick Morrisey

Tell us about yourself:

I’m the Trump endorsed conservative fighter running for the U.S. Senate. As West Virginia’s Attorney General, I beat Obama at the U.S. Supreme Court saving West Virginia jobs. I’m 100 percent pro-life and endorsed by West Virginians for Life. I’m proud to also be endorsed by the NRA because of my commitment to defending the Second Amendment rights of West Virginians.

I’m honored to have President Trump’s endorsement… President Trump knows, like many West Virginians, that it is time to send a conservative fighter to the Senate to fight for our West Virginia values.

Why I decided to run for this office?

I’m running for the U.S. Senate to give President Trump the ally he needs to make America great again, and more importantly, make West Virginia great again. President Trump has endorsed me in this race for Senate because he knows I’m the only candidate that will stand for the sanctity of life, defend our Second Amendment rights, build the wall on the southern border, and put an end to the opioid epidemic harming West Virginians from across the state.

I’m proud of our work with the Trump Administration to combat the opioid epidemic and protect West Virginia jobs. I hope to build on those accomplishments in the U.S. Senate, working with President Trump to advance an agenda that puts the men and women of the Mountain State first.
