For the record

Matthew C. Cook, 27, Point Pleasant, was recently arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver (methamphetamine), by the Mason County Sheriff’s Department.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Mason County Magistrate Court, Deputy M. A. Waugh observed a vehicle traveling east near the 7000-block of Ashton Upland Road in Ashton. The vehicle allegedly failed to dim its lights as it approached Waugh who then turned around, following the vehicle to make an attempt to stop it. Waugh reported it appeared the vehicle was traveling above the posted 45 mph speed limit with radar indicating it was traveling 70 mph. Once Waugh initiated the lights on the cruiser he stopped the car in the 9000-block of Ashton Upland Road, making contact with the driver identified as Cook.

Waugh reported he located a set of digital scales in Cook’s cargo pocket and was able to locate a safe under the front passenger seat that contained several bags with a substance consistent to methamphetamine, according to the complaint. One of the bags contained one large piece of a clear, crystal like substance consistent with methamphetamine, also according to the complaint.

A passenger in the vehicle stated they had let Cook drive their vehicle earlier in the day and had no knowledge of the safe or its contents, also according to the complaint.

Cook appeared for arraignment before Magistrate Gail Roush who set his bond at $100,000. Cook was listed as being housed at the Western Regional Jail as of Wednesday afternoon.
