RIO GRANDE — Evans Christian Outfitters (ECHO) is set to host its grand opening this Saturday, June 17 from noon until 4 p.m.
Guests will be treated to food and fellowship, and have the opportunity to tour the renovated facilities. Also on hand will be the board members from Friends of Camp Asbury (FOCA), which have led the effort to re-open Camp Asbury and create a facility that the community can enjoy and take advantage of.
The event is intended to help make the public aware of the new life in the old camp. It was originally donated by Bob Evans to the local United Methodist Conference in late 1959. It served as a church camp until recently when the United Methodist Church decided to sell the property. Several locals decided that a camp was still a necessary for Gallia County and formed FOCA, which has since raised funds, renovated Evans Lodge, worked on the ranger’s home, and has extensive plans to improve the camp as a whole.
While the camp exists because of the local church, and is operated by local church members (albeit from various denominations), ECHO is open to any groups wanting to take advantage of a camp setting or lodge without traveling long distances.
