MASON — A man who law enforcement says allegedly robbed the City National Bank in Mason on Friday afternoon, was apprehended in Athens County.

According to Mason Police Chief Rich Gilkey, Byron Jones, 42, The Plains, Ohio, was picked up by the Athens County Sheriff’s Office Friday night. An arrest warrant has been filed to extradite Jones back to West Virginia, Gilkey said. The details on Jones’ apprehension were unfolding at press times and no further information was available.

Jones is suspected of walking into the bank on Second Street at around 3:15 p.m., Friday, and demanding the teller give him cash. There were no weapons which were seen by the teller, according to Gilkey.

The man then left with an unspecified amount of cash and fled in a white Chevy Cavalier with an unidentified female passenger in the vehicle.

Officers with the Mason Police Department arrived on scene immediately after receiving the call, with assistance in this case from the Hartford Police Department, Mason County Sheriff’s Department and West Virginia State Police, as well as the Point Pleasant Police Department, the Athens County Sheriff’s Department and Athens City Police Department. Gilkey said an agent from the Federal Bureau of Investigation has also been assigned to investigate.

Gilkey expressed his thanks to the all law enforcement agencies which assisted in this case and ongoing investigation.
