MASON — Although the elections aren’t until June, candidates for municipal contests in the Bend Area towns of Mason and Hartford can begin filing for office next week.
The filing period for the June 13 elections is January 9-28, according to the West Virginia Secretary of State’s Office. Mailed candidacy papers must be postmarked by the U.S. Postal Service no later than midnight Jan. 28.
Slated to be elected in each town are a mayor, recorder, and five council members.
In Mason, the mayor is presently paid $200 a week with a required minimum of 12 hours of work per week. The recorder earns $450 per month, and council members are paid $25 per meeting attended. Council members are paid once a year. Beginning in July, the recorder will be required to work eight hours per week in the office during regular business hours.
Present Mason officials include Donna Dennis, mayor; Ciji Casto, recorder; and council members Bob Wing, Sharon Kearns, Marty Yeager, Emily Henry and Becky Pearson.
Dennis said at this time, she is unsure if she will seek re-election.
“I love my job and I love working for the town,” she said. “Some days it’s very rewarding and other days it’s a little overwhelming. I guess you have to take the good with the bad. I have a few weeks to think about it.”
Hartford’s town administration consists of Gordon Spencer, mayor; Cheryl Oldaker, recorder; and council members Carol Spencer, Patty Neil, David Burris, Charlotte Kimes and Natalie Staats.
The mayor presently has a salary of $100 per month, while council members are paid $50 per month. Mayor Spencer did not comment on whether he would seek re-election to his post.
Other important dates on the municipal election calendar include:
March 21, deadline for candidates to withdraw;
April 25, deadline for write-in candidates;
May 23, last day to register to vote in the municipal elections;
May 31-June 10, early voting; and,
