POINT PLEASANT — A Henderson teen is facing charges after a Point Pleasant teen died in a fatal automobile crash this week.

According to a joint press release from the Mason County Sheriff’s Department and the Mason County Prosecutor’s Office, on Wednesday, Dec. 7, around 1 p.m., deputies were dispatched to a crash at Chestnut Street in Henderson. Deputies report Chanse Baird, 18, Henderson, allegedly lost control of a Mercedes going across the roadway, striking a telephone pole before going over an embankment and into the Kanawha River.

James Brady Leonard, 18, Point Pleasant, was a passenger in the Mercedes and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Baird has been charged with negligent homicide (vehicular), reckless driving (second offense), driving on suspended/revoked operator’s license, failure to maintain control, drag racing. Baird was arraigned before Mason County Magistrate Gail Roush on Friday. Roush set his bond at $50,000 with a stipulation of home confinement. Baird posted bond and is now under the monitoring of the Mason County Home Confinement Department.

“As in any case, a charge alleging that a person committed a crime is merely an accusation and any such person is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty,” the release stated.
