POINT PLEASANT — A new incentive program is in affect at Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High School, and students are enjoying tunes as part of their treat.

Music on the Plaza, started by assistant principal Vickie Workman, brings in local entertainment for those with good behavior to enjoy during the school’s lunch periods.

“We wanted to reward our students who have positive behavior and give them something to look forward to,” Workman said.

According to Workman, students look forward to the special event held during lunch and is always asking who will be performing next.

Just this past week, local talent Jesse Crawford provided vocal, guitar and harmonica tunes for students. Other past performers have included Jeremiah Meadows and Ronnie Spencer’s Karaoke. Crawford and Meadows both recently competed at the State Colgate Country Showdown Contest in Parkersburg this summer.

Workman said the lunch music incentive program will continue all year long. While the weather is still nice, performers entertain at the school’s courtyard. In coming months, the music will be moved inside to the auditorium.

Another incentive also will soon be encouraged students at PPJSHS to maintain good behavior. Black Knight Incentive Cards will be made available to students in several weeks.

“Students can earn these cards by their good behavior, attendance, grades and community service,” Workman said. “There are many rewards that these cards can bring, so it is in the student’s best interest to try and obtain one.”

Workman also discussed other new additions at PPJSHS, including the ‘Royalty of the Month’ and the ‘Royal Court of the Month’.

The ‘Royalty of the Month’ is teacher nominated. One boy and one girl from each grade is selected by teachers from those nominated based on the following criteria: 1) no unexcused tardies or absences; and 2) no detention/ISS. Students will be announced each month and receive a special treat. Those in September are being treated to a movie in the auditorium and are allowed to bring a guest for the private showing.

The ‘Royal Court of the Month’ will be awarded each month to the one grade with the lowest percent of discipline referrals and the lowest percent of unexcused tardies/absences.
