NEW HAVEN — Area walkers, runners or those who simply want to support Wahama High School are encouraged to attend the second annual 5K Walk/Run for Education.

The 5K, hosted by the Lieving family in conjunction with the Wahama Scholarship Committee, will take place Saturday, April 17 in the town of New Haven. The walk/run will start at 8 a.m. with registration set for 6:30 a.m. at the New Haven Fire Station.

The 3.2-mile race is an out and back style course and will start on Fifth St. at the fire station. From there the race will go out to the end of Layne St. and then finish at the fire station. The first 100 participants that pick up their race packets will receive a t-shirt. There also will be overall winner prizes along with age division awards.

The cost for those registered prior to April 16 is $15. The cost to register on the day of the race is $20. All race proceeds will go toward the Wahama Scholarship Fund. All runners and walkers are welcome to participate, however bikes and pets are not permitted.

According to 5K organizers, last year’s inaugural event was a huge success with 105 participants. In addition, nearly $10,000 was generated for WHS scholarships. This year’s goal is to have 200 participants.
