Doug and Tammy Manuel, right, stand in front of their plane with Buddy and his new family in Pennsylvania. The Manuels are from Virginia, but have visited Mason County several times. They recently transported four dogs, including Buddy, from Mason County Animal Shelter through the Pilot N Paws Organization. Both would love to retire to Point Pleasant someday.
POINT PLEASANT — Doug and Tammy Manuel of Herndon, Va., hold Mason County close to their heart. Neither are from this area, but something paranormal has drawn them in and keeps them coming back for more.
The Manuels first visited Point Pleasant in 2007 for the annual Mothman Festival. Doug Manuel, an instrument and commercial pilot, flew from Virginia to the airport in Gallipolis, Ohio. Once entering West Virginia, they both felt like they belonged.
“Point Pleasant is on our short list of places to retire,” he said. “We love it there.”
Since Tammy Manuel is interested in the paranormal and the unusual, she was thrilled to be apart of the Mothman Festival. They first found out about it through the festival’s Web site.
“The name really describes this place — Point Pleasant,” Doug Manuel said. “There is just so much to do.”
But the couple wasn’t just a tourist for the two days of the festival. During their stay, they visited nearly everything in the area including the Point Pleasant River Museum, Tu-Endie-Wei State Park, Fort Randolph, and West Virginia State Farm Museum where they both enjoyed the steam engines.
“We absolutely loved walking downtown and feeling safe,” he said.
But that was in 2007.
Just this past January, the Manuels flew back to Mason County, this time landing at the Mason County Airport. Their destination? Just a few miles up the road to the Mason County Animal Shelter.
They loaded up their plane with four dogs from the shelter. The dogs were in need of new homes and families and the Manuels knew just who would want them.
Through the Pilots N Paws, an organization that provides rescue flights and overnight foster care or shelter to dogs in need, the Manuels transported four of Mason County’s furry friends to four different homes in Pennsylvania. Among them, Buddy, Maddie, Lady and Sounder, all found new, loving homes because of the Manuels’ affection for the animals.
According to Manuel, transporting the dogs by place is less traumatizing and stressful for man’s best friend.
“I enjoy being apart of this organization,” he said. “It saves so much time in traveling and the animals like it.”
Mr. Manuel travels a lot with his job and is looking forward to finding time in his schedule to come back to Mason County with his wife.
“The Mothman drew us in,” Doug said. “But the people made us love the place.”

Not only are the Manuels generous and fun people, we all benefit from Doug's flying talents and Tammy's way with dogs. Pilots N Paws has another dedicated team willing to donate so much to unite a rescue with their new family.
