LEON — Construction on the Town of Leon’s sewer project will finally begin next month.
On Tuesday, a meeting was held to discuss the pre-construction contracts for the project. According to Mayor Bruce Riffle, the meeting was for everyone involved with the project, including the construction company and representatives of the Department of Environmetal Protection (DEP), to review paperwork, which is now complete.
“The project will start in January, and it will take about a year to be complete,” Riffle said.
He added that once construction is finished, all homes in the town will be on a sewer system, which will in turn make the area more environmentally friendly. In addition, Riffle said that the project will make the town a more attractive place to live.
The sewer project is being funded through a small cities block grant, the West Virginia IJDC Grant and the West Virginia State Revolving Fund Grant, with the total cost estimated a $3.7 million. When complete, the system will serve more than 150 customers in Leon. Once construction is finished, the sewer rate will be $33 for 3,000 gallons used — this rate will not take effect until the entire project is both complete and approved.
Fields Excavating of North Carolina will handle the construction aspect of the sewer project.
“This project has been needed for a long time and a lot of people have worked hard on it. I feel good to be a part of it and to see it close to complete,” Riffle said.
