POINT PLEASANT — A family oriented business.

That statement certainly describes Siders Jewelers, a business located in both Point Pleasant and Gallipolis, Ohio.

JoAnne Siders has been involved with the family store for several years. According to Siders, she along with her husband David, have been the store owners since 2002, but have been involved with the business since the 1970s. Siders runs the Point Pleasant store while David operates the Gallipolis store. While Siders is a second generation of the jewelry store, her son, Josh, is a third generation.

She described the family aspect of the business as being very important. According to Siders, in 1947, Harry Siders opened his first jewelry store, Siders Watch Shop in Charmco, W.Va. In 1955, he moved to Mason County where he along with his wife, Blanche, opened Siders and Sons Jewelers in Gallipolis Ferry. In 1977, David joined the business and became a goldsmith/gemologist, and in 2002, Siders opened the family’s first jewelry store on Main Street in Point Pleasant. Although Harry passed away in 2003, JoAnne said that the family tradition lives on.

“It has been great to step into a store that’s already been established,” Siders said, adding that she enjoys working closely with family.

In fact, Siders described one of her fondest memories as working with loyal customers who have shopped at the business since its beginning.

“The older people that have come in and bought for several years means lot. The generations of people that come in — people that used to buy from Harry and Blanche — make me feel good,” she said.

As for her favorite aspect of the job, Siders said that she enjoys her daily interactions with customers.

“I love working with people. I love to interact and wait on people because they are more like family and friends,” she said.

She added that she often looks for items that her customers want and said that Siders Jewelers tries to have a wide range of items available.

“On a daily basis I try to get things to fit the customers needs. You never know what the customers are looking for, so you need a variety of stuff,” she said.

In addition, Siders said that the business makes community involvement a priority. Siders Jewelers donates to area schools on a regular basis and has been involved with both the Regatta and Fair Queen pageants for several years. Aside from the business’s community involvement, Siders also takes part in many community activities herself.

According to Siders, she is a member of the Red Hat Society, which works closely with nursing homes, senior citizens and the baby program at the Lakin Correctional Center. Siders also serves on the Mason County Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

In addition, Siders along with other members of the Main Street Business Community, will be participating in the area’s first annual Point of Christmas, which will enable local business owners to have an all day “open house” at their establishment on Saturday, Nov. 14. Siders came up with the idea because she wanted to get the point across that Christmas is a time of love, giving and sharing. In addition, she said that the concept’s goal is to get people to come to Point Pleasant to see what the area has to offer for the holidays.

Siders’ work schedule certainly is busy, but she said that she makes family time a priority. Her typical work day begins at 8:30 a.m. and the store opens at 9:30 a.m. Once she arrives to work, she checks e-mails and reviews orders. She then spends the majority of the day assisting customers. In addition, Siders Jewelers does in house repairs and can do same day sizing on items.

Siders also spends her time reading magazines to get information on the latest styles of jewelry as well as attends trade shows. She described both the employees and loyal customers as keeping Siders Jewelers in business for so many years.

“All the help that we get behind the scenes — we work together and treat the business like the family. It’s like a second home... We have very loyal customers. It has been great to step into a business that was already established,” Siders said.

Kindness also is something that Siders values, and she attributed treating others with respect as helping the business grow as well. She encouraged others to make kindness a part of their lives.

“Do unto others as you would have others do to you. Be nice and kind to everyone,” she said.

This is certainly one piece of advice that Siders has applied to her own life as she continues to run her business with kindness and devotion to both customers and the community.
