NEW HAVEN — Several issues were discussed regarding the Town of New Haven during Tuesday’s council meeting.
During the public forum portion of the meeting, Kenny Reynolds reported that the welcome sign, which is located on the north end of town, needs to be replaced. Mayor Ron Zerkle said that the town is currently applying for grant money to replace the sign.
Reynolds also announced that a pot hole is developing at Walnut and W.Va. 62. Council agreed to have Recorder Janet May call the Department of Highways (DOH) to see if the pavement can be evened out. It also was reported that Johnnie Oldaker would work to replace the manhole covers with sealed lids to help with the smell that has been coming from the Gatling and Sporn plants.
In other business:
• Mike Taylor reported that he passed his Class I Water test. To get his Class I certificate, he has to have 2,000 hours of supervised OJT. Council agreed to have Taylor come off the garbage truck to work full time on the water system. Council also agreed to give Taylor a $1 an hour raise, and to make the raise retro-active for four weeks.
• It was reported that the garbage truck would be worked on today.
• It was reported that the telemetry system at the water tank is in, and that the pump house needs to be finished.
• Zerkle asked to add Mill St. signs to the Claflin grant request, which council agreed to do. The grant was sent in on Wednesday.
• Council approved the letter of invoice to Common Wealth Underground for damage to the water line on Glenray.
• Council agreed to enact the residence verification form.
• Councilwoman Dorothy Roush made a motion to file an ad for the town’s Christmas parade, craft bazaar and visit by Santa, slated for Dec. 5. The ad is $146.70 for one eighth of a page.
• Council agreed to fund the New Haven Women’s Club Halloween Celebration, which will be tonight at the fire station, for $150.
• Council agreed to move the winter meetings’ start time to 6 p.m. Meetings will begin at 6 p.m. Nov. 10 through March 2010.
The next meeting will be 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10.
