POINT PLEASANT — The City of Point Pleasant Police Department now has a new custom golden eagle radar.
During Tuesday’s council meeting, Larry Kendall of the Governor’s Highway Safety Program presented the new radar to the police department as a reward for their service to the city. Capt. B.J. Veith accepted the award on behalf of the police department.
According to Mayor Brian Billings, Kendall said that he was impressed with the work that the police have done. Billings echoed Kendall’s statement and said that he was pleased with the police department.
“I am proud of all of them. We have a great department,” he added.
In addition, Kendall also presented the police department with two portable breathalyzers.
In other business:
• City Attorney R.F. Stein, Councilman Gary Cotton and Councilman Marshall Bonecutter did not attend the meeting.
• Barry Franz, environmental director for Burgess and Niple, discussed a $100,000 community wide hazardous substance and petroleum assessment grant that is available. According to Franz, the grant would help with the economic development of the former navy depot area.
• Due to Stein’s absence the following issues will be discussed at the November council meeting: first reading of the sewer ordinance 16-13; first reading of ordinance 361.07, regarding abandoned vehicles; first reading of ordinance 1331.02, regarding mobile homes and trailers; and Yeager Property estimates.
• City Clerk Amber Tatterson discussed the alcohol and drug-free workplace policy. A contract was provided by Joe Boggs and Associates. Council asked to review other contracts and will report back with their notes at an upcoming meeting.
• Council approved the second reading of the new codified ordinance pages.
• Council approved to accept the West Virginia Community Participation grant of $50,000 to continue the development of history lessons on the floodwall murals, located at Point Pleasant Riverfront Park.
• Council approved a resolution to accept the state of West Virginia .457 supplemental retirement plan through West Virginia Retirement Plus. The plan is voluntary for city employees.
• A proclamation to recognize Patricia Sallaz’s retirement as the Krodel Park Campground manager was read. A retirement party will be held for Sallaz 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30 at the City Building.
• Council approved the following re-appointments: Jane Martin, housing authority; Charles Rhodes, planning commission; Kip Hartenbach, planning commission; Jack Sturgeon, planning commission; Jack Coles, planning commission; Daniel Jones, board of zoning appeals; Timothy Scarberry, board of zoning appeals; Russell Holland, board of zoning appeals; Jack Lee, historic landmark commission; Sylvia Casey, historic landmark commission; and M. Leota Sang, historic landmark commission.
• Councilwoman Linda Smith asked council to offer all city employees Aflac as a voluntary payroll deduction. Council unanimously agreed to do so.
• Billings reported that the city auction will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24 at the City Building. A full list of items being auctions can be found in today’s Point Pleasant Register as well as the Oct. 23 edition of the Point Pleasant Register.
• Billings reported that the city has received several calls complimenting the paving that was recently done on Robinson St.
• Council met in executive session from 8:02-9 p.m. to discuss personnel matters.
• Council approved the parks and recreation committee’s nomination of Derrick Taylor to serve as the new Krodel Park Campground manager.
• The finance committee presented council with a list of recent pay adjustments. Council unanimously approved the following to receive pay adjustments: clerical city hall employees, city garage, floodwall, recreation, sanitation, street department, water office and the police secretary.
• It was reported that Trick-or-Treat will be 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29. The Halloween Block Party also will be Thursday, Oct. 29 from 6-8 p.m.
