The Mason County Board of Education honored members of the Mason County Vocational FFA for their achievements at the recent state FFA competition. The students were invited to this week’s board of education meeting to be recognized. The board of education also received updates about school infrastructure projects at Beale Elementary School, Point Pleasant Jr.-Sr. High School and Hannan High School.
Gary Mitchell, Director of Facilities, provided the board with information regarding Beale Elementary.
“We are still trying to get material, including doors and windows,” Mitchell said. “It is going quite well.”
The director also said that all of the change orders have been approved and that Mrs. Brumfield, Principal of Beale Elementary, should be able to hold her open house at the end of October.
Roof damage to the elementary school remains a concern with Mitchell and the board.
“It is one of the biggest facility problems in the county,” Mitchell said. “The original roofing on the building should be replaced once funding is approved. A grant will be available in January.”
Mitchell also disclosed information pertaining to the athletic complex at Point Pleasant Junior Senior High School. According to Mitchell, Phase 1 will start this Saturday, depending on the weather. It includes putting down rubberized paving for the track that will surround the football field. Two crews will be working on this project. Once finished, a spray coating will be added, along with the lines.
Mitchell said he hopes fencing around the complex will be finished by Friday’s Homecoming game.
Other facility updates included the Hannan High School pressbox. Buffington Greenhouse has become a partner in helping the high school and volunteers finish this project.
“It’s a good partnership,” Capehart said.
A meeting will be held at 2 p.m. today to discuss all details that coincide with this project. The scoreboard for the football field is also being transported to the high school soon, with erection of the sign taking place by next summer.
A kiln, an oven to bake pottery, will soon find a home at HHS. This equipment was purchased through a bond that the county had passed. If the fire marshal approves, then the school will have a kiln for their art department. A possible location for the kiln is the Vocational Agriculture building on campus. A protection barrier will also need to be put in place and there are some stipulations for this project.
Members of the Mason County Vocational FFA also were present to receive special recognition from the board. These were members who placed in the State FFA Contests. Team winners included: Agronomy Team, 10th place in state, Kristen Hannon, Jordan McCarty, Anthony Linger and Cooper Wilson; Meats Evaluation, 8th place in state, Amanda Hannon, Leticia Paugh, Kyle Kidwell, and Josh Mattox; Agribusiness Management, 6th place in the state, Russell Kidwell, Wes Davis, and Jacob Gleason; 7th and 8th grade Agriscience, 3rd place in the state, Danielle Foglesong, Denver Thomas, Nick Templeton and Savannah Dorsey. Individual winners at the state level were Denver Thomas, 7th and 8th grade Agriscience 10th place individual, and Danielle Foglesong, 7th and 8th grade Agriscience 5th place individual and high scorer for the state in the Agricultural Mechanics Section.
Mrs. Ruth Caplinger, Director of the Mason County Career Center and Mr. Kidwell, helped in presenting the students their awards.
