POINT PLEASANT — The fall season is officially here, and now that the month of October has arrived thoughts of chilly weather, Halloween and colorful leaves come to mind.
However, October also is a time to celebrate many causes. Since the weather is much cooler, many stray animals are looking for a warm place to call home, and this month serves as American Humane’s Adopt A Dog Month.
According to the American Humane Web site, www.americanhumane.org, the group works all year to support animal welfare organizations, promote adoptions and enhance the bond that people share with their companion animals. Each year during Adopt A Dog Month, American Humane provides shelters with tools and resources to continue fostering connections between people and pets.
During Adopt A Dog Month, American Humane encourages individuals to visit their local shelter or breed-rescue group to meet potential sidekicks and discover the many benefits of having a dog, such as happiness, companionship, improved physical and emotional health and devoted love.
Locally, dogs as well as cats can be adopted at the Mason County Animal Shelter. To check the availability and condition of animals, call the shelter at (304) 675-6458.
On the health front, October is celebrated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During the Sept. 24, Mason County Commission meeting, commissioners signed a proclamation that declared Oct. 2, as West Virginia Breast Cancer Awareness Day and the month of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The 15th Annual Wreath Hanging, which is an event designed to promote breast cancer awareness, is slated for 1 p.m. Friday at the Mason County Public Library (see related story for details).
October also is designated as National Dental Hygiene Month. According to the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, dental hygiene month is intended to increase public awareness about the connection between oral health and overall healthiness. It also is a way to emphasize the importance of educating families on situations that impact their oral health.
The ADHA’s Web site, www.adha.org, stresses the importance of starting early with a daily oral care routine in order to prevent cavities and periodontal disease.
National Domestic Violence Awareness Month also is observed each October across the country. According to www.SafeYouth.org, any violence taking place within a family or intimate relationship is considered domestic violence.
Studies have shown that children who witness violence at home experience problems such as behavior issues and aggression. The National Domestic Violence Hotline, (800) 799-SAFE, provides 24-hour service. Locally, those who have experienced violence or know someone that has, can contact the Branches Domestic Violence Shelter in Huntington at (304) 529-2382.
Additional causes celebrated in October include Animal Safety and Protection Month, Chili Month, Chiropractic Month, Crime Prevention Month, Cyber Security Awareness Month, Disability Employment Awareness Month, Down Syndrome Awareness Month and Vegetarian Month.
