POINT PLEASANT — It has been a week of fun, activities, entertainment and shows galore.
But all good things must come to an end, and today is the final day of the 2009 Mason County Fair.
Friday’s events were quite busy with the Junior Livestock Sale, which is where 4-H and FFA members were rewarded for their project efforts. The livestock sale featured feeder calves, market steers, special lambs, market lambs, market meat goats and market hogs. Aside from the sale, Anthony Bond was declared the 2009 Mason County Fair Idol winner.
Other activities on Friday included the Master Market Showmanship contest, and the presentations of the Peoples Bank Fair Scholarship Awards and the Ohio Valley Bank Born and Raised in Mason County Awards. Fairgoers also enjoyed a performance from the Point Pleasant Middle School Band and Riverside Cloggers. The Adam Gregory concert and chicken catch ended Friday’s events.
Although today is the last day of the fair, there are still several activities on tap. Starting at 9 a.m. will be the Open Mason County Youth Horse Fun Show, followed by the Dash-4-Cash at 11 a.m. The carnival also will open at 1 p.m., and additional activities include horse shoe pitching at 1 p.m., Pedal Tractor Pull at 2 p.m., corn hole playoffs at 2 p.m., show time with L.D. in the show ring at 4 p.m., Open Horse Show at 6 p.m., Motorcycle Motocross at 6 p.m. and the Arm Wrestling Contest on the inside stage at 6 p.m.
Closing out the day will be a performance from this year’s headlining act, Diamond Rio. According to Brian Billings, fair board first vice president, the fair board has tried to get Diamond Rio to perform at the fair for several years.
“We are very excited about Diamond Rio,” he said.
Diamond Rio’s first seven albums were certified gold or platinum, and the band scored a No. 1 hit with “Beautiful Mess” in 2002, followed by the No. 1 hit “I Believe” in 2003. The band also was inducted into the Grand Ole Oprey in 1998. Diamond Rio will take the main stage tonight at 9 p.m.
