According to Bernita Allen, event organizer, this is the second year for Mason County Idol. She described last year’s inaugural competition as being very successful with several participants.
“We had a great following every day (last year). That inside stage (at the fairgrounds would fill up,” she said.
The winner of last year’s idol, Tarah Gerlach, performed on the main stage during the 2008 Mason County Fair. Gerlach also went on to win the state Colgate County Showdown in Parkersburg a few weeks later.
Anyone age 10 and up is eligible to participate in Mason County Idol, and there are no categories according to age.
“You could be a 10 year old singing against a 20 year old,” Allen said.
According to Allen, those trying out will be required to sing A ccapella as tryouts will follow a similar format to the “American Idol” television show.
“We will eliminate down to the final five contestants with an elimination at the Bend Area Community Center on July 25,” Allen said.
The final five contestants will compete 5 p.m. each day at the Mason County Fair, which is slated for Aug. 10-15, on the inside stage at the fairgrounds. The winner will be announced at the conclusion of Friday’s performance, and the winner will sing on the main stage Friday evening.
In addition, Gerlach will perform at the final idol elimination.
“No matter how famous they get, winners must come back and perform next year,” Allen said.
She added that the final five contestants received money last year and this year’s final five contestants will receive money as well.
Other final five contestants for the 2008 Mason County Idol were Chase Likens, first runner-up; Veronika Ohlinger, second runner-up; Jolisha Cundiff and Hillary Reigel.
