Stone locks up first half Riverside championship

MASON, W.Va. — Carl Stone of Ripley has sealed his claim to the first half championship in the Riverside Senior Men’s Golf League.

Stone has a total of 144 season points and holds a 22.5-point lead over the competition with one week remaining.

Claude Proffitt of Patriot currently sits second with 118.5 points, followed by Chet Thomas (Patriot) with 114 points. Ralph Sayre of New Haven is in fourth with 108.5 points, while Mick Winebrenner of Racine rounds out the top-five with 103 points.

Seventy-nine players were out for league play Tuesday, with 19 teams of four and one team of three participating for a total of 20 points. The low score of 58 (12-under par) was shot by two teams.

The trio of Howard Lee Miller (Point Pleasant), Jim Gordon (Shade) and Jack Maloney (Gallipolis) — as well as the quartet of Carl Stone, Craig Barnes (Gallipolis), Tom McNeely (Point Pleasant) and Bub Stivers (Pomeroy) — both combined to post the low scores of the day.

The third place team of Siebert Belcher (Pomeroy), Jim Lawrence (Racine), Rich Gilkey (Middleport) and Bill Pethtel (New Haven) was one shot back with a combined 59.

The closest to the pin winners were John Thompson (Point Pleasant) on No. 9 and Gary Minton (Gallipolis) on No. 14. A total of 119 different players have attended the first half of the season.
