Point’s Mitchell to play in all-star game

POINT PLEASANT — Point Pleasant High School senior Derek Mitchell has accepted an invitation to join 36 football standouts on the North Bears All-star squad. The annual North-South Football clash features 70 of the most outstanding football players in West Virginia. The classic will be played at Laidley Field in Charleston, June 20, at 7 p.m.

Derek Mitchell played wide receiver/free safety for the Point Pleasant Big Blacks under the direction of Head Coach Dave Darst. Mitchell was awarded 1st Team All-Cardinal Conference in 2008 as well as all-state honorable mention and plans to attend Marshall University where he has been invited to walk-on for the Thundering Herd. He is the son of Darrell and Debbie Mitchell of Point Pleasant.

At the helm for the North Bears is Mark Nardone of Wheeling Park High School. Assisting Coach Nardone will be Andy Seals (Wheeling Park High School), Mark Yoho (Grafton High School), and Drew Toth (Grafton High School).

For the opposing South Cardinals, heading the ranks is Bennie Hopkins, head football coach at Valley High School. Assisting Coach Hopkins will be George Beard (Valley High School), Teddy Spadaro (Princeton High School), and Eddie Souk (Mt. Hope High School).

The West Virginia Schools Athletic Coaches Association sponsors the game. Directing training camp and game activities will be Bob Mullett, coach at Van High School.

Game Tickets are $8 and can be purchased by contacting Lou Ann Lanham, Laidley Field, 300 Elizabeth Street, Charleston, WV 25301. Enclose a check payable to Laidley Field and a self-addressed stamped envelope.
