POINT PLEASANT — Seven people have applied to be the next superintendent of schools in Mason County.
During a special meeting Tuesday, members of the Board of Education met in executive session to determine questions and procedures about the interview process, according to Board President Tom Nunnery. The board has scheduled a special meeting at 8:30 p.m. today at the Mason County Career Center for the purpose of discussing and taking possible action on the superintendent candidates.
Nunnery said all the candidates are from West Virginia, with two of them being from Mason County. Their names have not been released to the public.
The board will interview the candidates beginning at 9 a.m. May 2 at the career center.
Current Superintendent Dr. Larry Parsons was hired in March by the state board to become superintendent of Preston County after the state took over that system due to limited financial resources and deteriorating school buildings.
The new superintendent will start in his or her role July 1.
In other business:
• Board members approved the levy rate and Treasurer Chris Campbell conducted a budget workshop. The budget will be available for public review at local libraries and the board’s central office. There will be a hearing May 12 for approval.
• After rejecting an increase in meal prices, board members adopted an increase in adult meal prices. Following the state and federal mandates, the board raised the prices of adult meals to recover costs. Student prices will not be raised.
The next regular meeting will be 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28.
