Old cell phones needed
POINT PLEASANT — Point Pleasant in Bloom is collecting used cell phones during the month of April to be donated to victims of domestic abuse in Mason and Gallia counties. Any phones not needed for this purpose will be sent to a nonprofit group that will dispose of all parts of the phone in an environmentally responsible manner.
Point Pleasant in Bloom members agreed that it is important that cell phones be recycled because they contain toxic metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic that, if placed in a landfill, would leach into the soil and groundwater. Recycling also decreases the need for more metal mining.
Individuals who want to donate their cell phones may drop them off at the pharmacy counter at Fruth Pharmacy in Point Pleasant or in the office at Twin Rivers Foodland in Point Pleasant.
POINT PLEASANT — Friday’s square dance at the Gene Salem Senior Center in Point Pleasant has been canceled due to the Good Friday holiday.
NEW HAVEN — For the 34th consecutive year, Smith-Capehart Post 140 of the American Legion in New Haven will give two $500 scholarships to students who are children or grandchildren of Post 140 members.
To be eligible, students must be graduating from high school and planning to further their education by attending a school of higher education.
The student’s name, name of Legionnaire parent or grandparent and the name and address of the school of his or her choice should be submitted to Denver R. Gibbs, Post Adjutant, at P.O. Box 616, Mason, WV 25260 no later than May 10.
Money will be paid to the school in the student’s name and not to the student. The scholarship money is to be used for tuition and books only. Winners will be announced at the Post’s regular meeting May 13. The Post also will nominate officers for the upcoming year during that meeting. All members are encouraged to attend.
