Lilah J. “Sweets” Zerkle, 87, of Mason, went to be with her Lord March 29, 2009 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington.

She was a retired post office clerk at the Mason Post Office. She was a member of Mason United Methodist Church and served in many aspects of church life, including United Methodist Women, Sunday School teacher, Sewing for Hospice and attended Bible study at St. John United Methodist Church in Scott Depot. Lilah was also a member of the Couples Club.

Born Dec. 10, 1921 in Mason, she was the daughter of the late Lemuel J. Ruttencutter and Mary Magdelene (Gold) Ruttencutter.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Lester “Peck” Zerkle; and brothers, Paul Ruttencutter and Harry Herman Ruttencutter.

She is survived by her daughters, Claudia (Gene) Thomas of New Haven and Jennifer (Reg) Hart of Teays Valley; four grandchildren, Gina (Mark) Smith of Huntington, Allison (Brad) Curtioff of Asheville, N.C., Chris (Connie) Thomas of New Haven and Robbie Thomas of New Haven; great-grandchildren, Ryan Thomas of New Haven and Elijah Smith of Huntington; brother-in-law, Donald Zerkle of Hartford; sister-in-law, Pauley Beaver of Middletown, Ohio; and cousin, Evelyn Profitt of Mason.

A celebration of life will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 1 at Mason United Methodist Church with the Rev. Scott Knowlton officiating. The body will lie in state one hour prior to service. Burial will follow in New Lone Oak Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
