POINT PLEASANT — Weather permitting, students may get out of school a little earlier than expected.

At Tuesday’s meeting of the Mason County Board of Education (BOE), Director of Curriculum/Technology Greg Martin discussed moving three Outside School Environment (OS) Days to the end of the school calendar, making the students’ last day of school May 31 and last day for staff on June 5.

At the beginning of the school year, OS days were set for March 1, 8, 15, 22, April 12, and 19, and were placed on the calendar as optional make-up days for instructional days missed due to inclement weather. Superintendent Suzanne Dickens said she is leaving the OS days on March 1 and 22, and moving the days set for March 15 and April 12 and 19 to the end of the year. The BOE has already previously announced March 8 as a make-up day.

Martin said this was a process which takes place every winter, and sometimes changes are made and sometime changes are not, depending on how many days have been missed. Martin said Mason County Schools is required to have 180 days of instruction for all students, and Dickens said so far there have been eight days of no instruction this school year.

Dickens and Martin also noted this is still subject to change since more days may still be canceled due to inclement weather. Any changes will be put on an agenda at a later meeting for approval.
