New Haven council reviews budget

NEW HAVEN — At the most recent meeting of the New Haven Council, council members reviewed budget totals for 2012-13.

Council members were presented the budget and were asked to review it before officially laying the levy, which will take place at meeting on April 16.

Council members also discussed the town’s audit report in regards to funding for recreation in the amount of $1,358.34. Council members discussed which area this funding should come from, listing either coal severance or recreation in the minutes. Mayor George Gibbs stated he would like to see the audit report before making a decision. Gibbs is also waiting to see the audit before any decision is made concerning the B & O Taxes.

It was also announced that Mayor Gibbs is planning on meeting with Mason County Schools Superintendent Suzanne Dickens on placing a police officer at New Haven Elementary School, as well as the town attorney to discuss concerns on a business in a residential area.

In other council news, Councilman Kenneth Vickers presented council with several photos of a dilapidated building near the entrance to the town. It was stated the building is a safety hazard and the zoning board is looking into having something done with the property.

Discussion on a burning ordinance for the town was also carried over to another meeting. Also concerning the garbage department, it was noted that town workers repaired the hoist on the garbage truck. Concerning the wastewater department, Mayor Gibbs also read a note from Kara Cho from Trident Insurance Company regarding the Napa Building.

A motion was also made to allow the council to purchase 2013 Labor Law posters, if needed, with a first from Councilwoman Jessica Howard and a second from Councilman Jim Elias. Motion carried.

The following building permits were also approved: Permit 724 to Jeff Roush for fencing and a roof. Councilwoman Howard made a motion to accept the permit with a second from Councilwoman Amy Ferguson. Motion carried with one abstention due to being on the zoning board.

The minutes from the previous meeting were also read and approved with a first from Councilwoman Sarah Gibbs and a second from Councilwoman Ferguson. The financial report was also read and approved with a first from Councilwoman Howard and a second from Councilwoman Ferguson. Accounts payable were also approved with a first from Councilwoman Ferguson and a second from Councilman Elias. All motions carried.

In addition to Mayor George Gibbs, council members present were Jessica Howard, Kenneth Vickers, Jim Elias, Amy Ferguson, Sarah Gibbs, and Recorder Roberta Hysell.

The Town of New Haven Council will meet again at 6 p.m. on March 7.
