POINT PLEASANT — With local events for other various causes, members of the Country Stars 4-H club recently decided to begin a new event for a cause close to their hearts.

In conjunction with the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Cincinnati, the Country Stars will be presenting a “Courage Walk,” a walk to raise epilepsy awareness in Mason County, at 1 p.m. on April 6 at the Riverfront Park, with registration at beginning at noon. According to Country Stars Leader Becky Gibson, this is the first walk in Mason County geared for this type of awareness.

Much like the local breast cancer walk and the Relay for Life, one typically doesn’t think of these causes unless there is a personal connection to it. Gibson said her two children, who are members of the Country Stars, have been diagnosed with epilepsy. The group considered the other local events and felt since there has yet to be one for this particular cause, they were going to explore their options and the idea has snowballed from there.

Again like the local breast cancer walk, Gibson said the Country Stars will have a team for the event and encourage others to do the same and registration information will soon be available. Those who have been diagnosed with epilepsy are also encouraged to attend and take part in a ribbon cutting to begin the walk.

Gibson also said donations of any kind for the event would be greatly appreciated and some particular items needed include water bottles, balloons, flowers, fruit, and granola bars. In addition to information on epilepsy being available at the walk, the Country Stars will also have a booth at the Mason County Health Department’s Health Symposium, which is from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the National Guard Armory.
