SILO – Tobi Miller scored 16 points and Chelsey Pilkilton finished with 14 points as the Caddo Lady Bruins defeated the Vanoss Lady Wolves 40-28 on Friday night to advance to the next round of the 2A District 7 tournament.

The Lady Bruins dominated time of possession in the fourth quarter and held the Lady Wolves to two points in the final minutes.

“I thought our defense was good and we have been playing well here lately but we need to start shooting the ball better than we did tonight,” said Caddo coach Vernon Johnson.

The Lady Bruins did the majority of their scoring in the first and third quarter. Pilkilton scored eleven of her fourteen points and Caddo hit four three-pointers as a team to take a 17-4 lead after the first eight minutes.

Vanoss continued to hang around as the Lady Bruins fell into a shooting slump in the second quarter. Katie Pershbacher and Crystal Fredrick scored key baskets as the Lady Wolves outscored Caddo 10-2, but still trailed 19-14 at halftime.

The Lady Bruins hit five more three-pointers in the third quarter to add to the lead. Miller scored eleven of her sixteen points in the third.

The Lady Wolves went on a 7-0 scoring run in the final minutes of the quarter but a three-pointer from Ricki Braziell at the buzzer gave the Lady Bruins a 36-26 lead heading into the fourth. Braziell finished the game with 4 points. Allison Joines and Shelby Dellinger each scored 3 points.

The Lady Bruins will take on the Silo Lady Rebels in the next round at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. The winner and runner-up will advance to the regional tournament. “We will have to shoot the ball well tomorrow night against Silo,” said Johnson. “Since we don’t have much of a post game we will have to rely on our shooting.”

Vanoss Wolves 46 v. Caddo Bruins 42

The 2012-13 basketball season came to an end for the Caddo Bruins on Friday night with a tough loss to the Vanoss Wolves.

“We played hard tonight,” said Caddo coach Chris Hall. “We made some mental mistakes but I’m proud of the way they played and I think we came a long way this season.”

The Bruins were one bucket short of pulling off a last-minute comeback in the fourth. With a 44-36 Vanoss lead and forty-five seconds remaining in the game, Ryan Minyard hit a three-pointer to pull the Bruins within five. The Wolves turned the ball over on an inbounds play and Peyton Joines hit another three-pointer to make it 44-42 with twenty-nine seconds.

Vanoss repeated the same mistake on the following inbounds play but a three-pointer from Jacob Ross rimmed out. “We might have been able to draw something up there at the end but we were out of timeouts,” said Hall. “Our guards are pretty young this year but Ross can shoot the ball well.”

Ricky Hall scored for Vanoss on a layup to make it 46-42. The Bruins were unable to get a shot to fall as time expired. Minyard was the leading scorer for Caddo with 15 points. Joines finished with 14 points and Patrick Joines scored 9 points. Ross and Rosendo Chavez each finished with 2 points. Minyard scored 8 points in the first quarter as the Bruins led 12-10.

After three lead changes in the second quarter, it was all knotted up at halftime, 18-18. The Bruins went on a 5-0 run early in the second half with buckets from Patrick and Peyton Joines.

The Wolves answered with a 6-0 run to retake the lead. Patrick Joines scored at the buzzer to give the Bruins a 27-26 lead.

“I was proud of my seniors and even though we only returned one starter this year, we still had a .500 season,” said Hall. “Obviously it would have been nice to go on for a few more games but it was a good year for us regardless.” Vanoss will play Silo in the next round of the district tournament on Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
