BECKLEY, W.Va. — Unbeaten no more.

The Point Pleasant boys basketball team knocked Greenbrier East from the ranks of the undefeated Friday night with a 62-60 win at the Big Atlantic Classic.

The Spartans (16-1) out scored PPHS (5-8) 18-to-10 in the opening period but the Big Blacks answered back with a 23-to -14 run in the second quarter to take the lead.

Greenbrier East came out of the half with its best defensive effort of the night holding PPHS to just nine points in the third period. GEHS scored 14 in the third and held the 46-42 advantage headed into the finale. Point Pleasant rallied to out score the Spartans 20-14 over the final eight minutes, including two free throws by Wade Martin that sealed the game and the 62-60 win for the Big Blacks.

Alex Somerville went off for 26 points on the night, while Dillon McCarty added 17. Aden Yates chipped in with six points, Martin added five and Garrett Norris marked four. Adam Slack and Nate Chapman each had two markers to round out the PPHS scoring.

Greenbrier East Was led by Rondale Watson with 30 points on the night, followed by Obiora Maduagwana Romeo with 13. Bryce Woodliff added eight points, Dereck Weiford marked five, while Evan Ramsey and Ryan Lindsey rounded out the Spartans scoring with two points each.

The win gives Point Pleasant four consecutive victories.
