Arnolda Smith Carpenter, 85, of Point Pleasant, died Wednesday, January 23, 2013, at her home with her family at her side.
She was born February 15, 1927, in Mason County, a daughter of the late Frank Workman and Garnette (Buckalew) Workman Proffitt. She retired from Pleasant Valley Hospital, Point Pleasant. Arnolda attended New Beginings Baptist Church, Point Pleasant, and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution Colonel Charles Lewis Chapter where she held many offices and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star of Point Pleasant.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father, Emory A. Proffitt, who raised her; two husbands, Wendell G. Smith and James Carpenter; two brothers, Charles and William H. Proffitt; and one sister, Sandra (Proffitt) Gafken.
Surviving is one son, Wendell (Sue) Smith of Point Pleasant; two grandsons, Lee (Christine) Smith and George (Annette) Smith both of Point Pleasant; one granddaughter, Julie Smith-Hay of Point Pleasant; eight great-grandchildren, Matthew Smith, Daniel Despres, George Jr, Ashley and Christopher Smith, Tristen and Teagan Hay and Torianna Smith all of Point Pleasant; sister-in-law, Zelda Proffitt of Point Pleasant; special friends, Louise Early and Permalee Layton both of Point Pleasant; her little dog Smitty; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
At her request, there was no public visitation. A private graveside service was held on Saturday, January 26, 2013, at the Suncrest Cemetery in Point Pleasant, with Pastor Charles Stansberry officiating. Deal Funeral Home in Point Pleasant is serving the family.
