MASON COUNTY — The new year is well under way in Mason County and the schedule for the remainder of the year has been set with the 2013 Calendar of Events from the Mason County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
In addition to the popular annual events such as the Mothman Festival, the Siege of Fort Randolph and the Mason County fair, two brand new events have been added to this year’s schedule both set for June 1.
The first new event is titled the “Brigade of the American Revolution” which will be from 10 a.m until 5 p.m. on June 1 at Fort Randolph. At this event, re-enactors will recreate the life of the common solider of the American War for Independence from 1775-1783. Soldiers from various backgrounds and different armies will be portrayed, including Continental, Militia, British, Loyalist, German, French, Spanish and Native American, as well as civilians.
The second new event, titled “The Roots of Un-Civil War,” will take place from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on June 1, at Tu-Endie-Wei State Park, and will portray the 250th Anniversary of Chief Cornstalk’s Campaign. Re-enactors will portray Shawnee women’s and men’s social roles, with a particular focus on Cornstalk’s sister, Nonhelema. There will also be a walk along the Riverfront Park floodwall and presentation of the Shawnee and Virginian history depicted in the frescos on the wall, as well as demonstrations on warrior/hunter skills and communication, trail food preparation, and long-distance traveling techniques.
The schedule of other events first begins on April 19, with the Shanty Boat Night at the Point Pleasant River Museum. Then there is the Antique Gas Engine Show on May 4-5 at the West Virginia State Farm Museum, followed by the Siege of Fort Randolph from May 17-19 at Fort Randolph, and then the Memorial Day parade on May 25 in Point Pleasant.
In addition to the two new events, also on June 1 is the Antique Tractor Pull at the farm museum and the Bend Area C.A.R.E./Budweiser Catfish Tournament in Mason. Closing out the month of June of course is the Sternwheel Regatta from June 27-29 at the Riverfront Park.
Opening the month of July will be the Fourth of July Parades in New Haven and Mason, followed by Traditional Music Saturday on July 6 at Fort Randolph. On July 13 will be the Annual Point Pleasant River Museum Car/Bike Show, with the Tractor Games at the farm museum right after on July 20. From July 25-28 will be the River Museum’s Tennis Tournament and on July 29 will be the River Museum’s Annual Belle of Cincinnati Dinner Cruise at the Riverfront Park. The American Queen will also make the first stop of the summer at the Riverfront Park on July 29.
The schedule continues with the Mason County Fair Parade in Point Pleasant, the Traditional Crafter’s Weekend at Fort Randolph, and the second docking of the American Queen all on Aug. 3. Then perhaps the biggest event of the year, the Mason County Fair will be from Aug. 5-10, with the tractor pull at the fairgrounds set for Aug. 6. The American Queen will make her third and fourth stops in Point Pleasant on Aug. 7 and Aug. 13, followed by the Annual Point Pleasant Rodders Car Show on Aug. 17 and the Tribute to the River at the Riverfront Park from Aug. 30-31
Two events will opening the month of September will be the Antique Tractor Pull at the Farm Museum and Longhunters and Landgrabbers at Fort Randolph, both on Sept. 7. On Sept. 19-20 will be the Mothman Festival Pageants, with the Mothman Festival right behind on Sept. 21-22. Also on Sept 21 will be the Mothman Festival Hayrides at the farm Museum and the Bend Area C.A.R.E Fall Catfish Tournament in Mason.
Continuing into October, Battle Days will be from Oct. 4-6 at Tu-Endie-Wei State Park with the Battle Days parade on Oct. 5. The Country Fall Festival will also be from Oct. 5-6 at the farm museum, followed by the Harvest Fest/All-Hallows Eve and Tales in the Tavern on Oct. 26 at Fort Randolph.
In November, the Antique Tractor Pull is set for Nov. 2 at the farm museum, followed by the Amvets Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 9 in Point Pleasant. Also on Nov. 15 will be the opening of the Christmas Fantasy Light Show at Krodel Park.
Closing out 2013 will be the Point Pleasant Holiday Parade on Dec. 6, and Christmas on the Frontier at Fort Randolph and the Christmas parades in New Haven and Mason, all on Dec. 7. In addition to the Christmas Fantasy Light Show at Krodel Park continuing until Dec. 31, from Dec. 13-22 is the Christmas Light Show and Drive-Thru at the farm museum.
